Andrew Fitzpatrick

At Phoenix, we are extremely lucky to have so many loyal customers. We see most of them coming back every three to four years. But for one customer, there was a 17 year wait before returning!

Andrew Fitzpatrick drove away in his new Honda Civic back in September 1998 and it served him well right up until January 31st when he purchased a 64 plate replacement from Phoenix Motown.

“I look at the Phoenix website regularly and I just couldn't get my head around why such a new car would be in the used car section so I had to come down and see it. I had just taken my son to the train station and he said how he was embarrassed to be seen in the old Civic so I knew it was the time to go and have a look.”

Mr Fitzpatrick was notably impressed by how technology has improved in cars since his last purchase and after taking a test drive the deal was subsequently done; but not before negotiating another trip to our magnificent Phoenix Sky Box at Celtic Park! The avid Celtic supporter had been treated to trip back in 1998 after purchasing the Civic and can’t wait to go again. Andrew recalled:

“The last time I was there Celtic beat Dundee 6-1 and it was Moravcik’s debut. I'm looking forward to going back and hopefully it’s as good as last time.”

Despite being delighted with his new car, Andrew was understandably sad to see the Civic go; he smiled:

“It was hard saying goodbye to the car. It didn't give me a spot of bother the whole time I had it. I've had it for so long and it’s became part of the family. I hope it goes to a good home.”

We will certainly make sure it does. Everyone at Phoenix wishes Mr Fitzpatrick many happy miles in his new car. Although we hope it’s not another 17 years before we meet again!

Paper Counterpart Licences to be Scrapped in 2015.

In October 2014, the paper tax disc was abolished. Authorities can now tell if your taxes were paid by running your licence plate, working with the DVLA

Recent news has stated that the paper counterpart of your driving licence will no longer be valid from June 2015.

When you renew your licence, or change your address you will no longer be provided with a paper counterpart, only a new card licence will be provided to you.

This is part of a joint venture between the DVLA and Motor Insurers Bureau (MIB) called ‘MyLicence‘, which will allow drivers to check their details online.

In what we believe is an attempt to prevent fraud, insurance companies can check driver’s licences through MyLicence. The hope is that people will no longer make false statements when getting their cars insured or perhaps lie about their driving convictions.

We understand that many people will have questions on how this will affect them. So we've addressed a few of the main points below.

Should you get rid of your paper license? You should destroy your counterpart licence when they are no longer valid (as of June 2015). However you MUST keep your photocard driving licence.

If your driving licence was issued before 1998 then you need to keep a hold of it, as they will still be valid. The next time you renew your licence you will be sent a photocard licence only.

Penalty points are recorded on the paper counterpart, but when this new venture takes off, all convictions will be recorded online, and you can get check yours by phone, post or online.

What about hiring a car? Various sources have reported that there is a digital enquiry service being developed by the DVLA, which will allow car hire companies to view all of the details that are currently available on the counterpart licence.

We'd like to stress that only people who have the right to access these details will be able to do so, with the permission and knowledge of the licence holder.

If you have any questions regarding any of the above points we’ve covered, our Kia Hire Drive Department would be happy to answer them, so please feel free to get in touch on 08444 999 200.

What do you think about the paper counterpart being scrapped? A step in the right direction with paperwork to look after, or do you believe this is still a relevant piece of documentation?

Phoenix Brands triumph at Scotland Car of the Year Awards

Friday night The Fairmount in St Andrews hosted the annual Scotland Car of the Year Awards (SCOTY) and on the lead up to the ceremony there was an impressive list of contenders for the award. The Hyundai i10 proved to be too strong for the rest as it went on to claim the Scotland Car of the Year Award by the Association of Scottish Motoring Writers.

Alisdair Suttie, president of the Association of Scottish Motoring Writers, said: “The fact that Hyundai i10 not only won its category but also the overall Scottish Car of the Year accolade – ahead of many significantly more expensive newcomers – is a true testament to this car’s strengths.

"Hyundai i10 is perfectly placed to appeal to a Scottish audience, particularly for private buyers parting with their own cash, showing that drivers no longer need to make sacrifices when downsizing.

Hyundai has sold over 2,200 new i10’s since its launch in January and here at Phoenix we are proud to have played a part. We anticipated the car was going to be success as it went from strength to strength after its launch in our showrooms and in our pop up store back in.

It wasn’t all about the Hyundai at the awards on Friday night though as Mazda ran out winners for the ‘Family Car’ category with their Mazda 3 scooping the award. The Mazda 3 has been another one of our cars that has been in hot demand since its release and the judges of the SCOTY Awards were on hand to praise the cars styling, driving dynamics, quality, performance and efficiency as it also came runner up in the ‘Diesel’ catergory.

Mazda is no stranger to the SCOTY awards. In 2012, the Mazda CX-5 won the 'Safety' award, and in 2013 the Mazda6 2.2-litre topped the 'Eco' award honours list.

This year's battle for 'Family Car' honours was amongst the closest in SCOTY history, with three all-new cars from popular brands -the all-new Mazda3, Citroen Cactus and Peugeot 308.

Mazdas have always been a big hit with private buyers in Scotland,” said Association of Scottish Motoring Writers (ASMW) President Alisdair Suttie. “Both the Hatchback and Fastback models impress,” he continued. “The interior's by far the best of any Mazda to date, new SKYACTIV engines deliver strong performance with low emissions, and the diesel is exceptional.

Its victory in one of the most significant categories in the SCOTY awards reinforces just how compelling a proposition the all-new Mazda3 makes for both private buyers and company car drivers in Scotland.

The SX4 S-Cross was awarded Crossover of the Year on the night also which we were extremely proud of also.

S-Cross was judged by the 15 members of the association, scoring the most points in the Crossover category and achieving the third award for Suzuki since the SCOTYs were launched.

Alisdair Suttie, President of the ASMW said “Suzuki’s SX4 S-Cross drew our eye with its good looks and sealed the deal with its excellent value for money, spacious cabin, engaging drive and generous equipment levels. The fact that it launched with class-leading emissions didn’t go unnoticed among the judges either.

Dale Wyatt, Sales and Marketing Director, Suzuki commented “We are all delighted that the association have announced the SX4 S-Cross as their Crossover of the Year – The opinion of the Scottish media is very important to us, and it is great the SX4 S-Cross has been recognised with this prestigious award.

Why not come and try out the award-winning models for yourself?

Suzuki S-CROSS gets the Seal of approval at Hessilhead Wildlife Rescue

Phoenix Suzuki took the short journey down to Beith in order to visit the Hessilhead Wildlife Rescue Hospital. The journey was not to visit the amazing wildlife that Hessilhead help to care for, but to deliver their new car.

Phoenix Suzuki are proud to help to support Hessilhead Wildlife Rescue for all the work they do and we hope that the Suzuki S-Cross will help them in their day to day running of the hospital.

For over 25 years Hessilhead has cared for Scotland's injured and orphaned wildlife, aiming to rescue, treat, rehabilitate and release birds and animals back to the wild. Andy and Gay Christie, along with the rest of the team at Hessilhead were excited when we arrived with their new car.

The 4x4 comes with everything they will need for their rescues and we look forward to hearing about all the success stories in the future with their new S-Cross. Andy and Gay said ‘We were all very excited when our new 4 wheel drive vehicle, provided by Phoenix Suzuki, was delivered. Our old car has been chugging along slowly for the past few weeks, and is certainly due for retirement.

There have been days when we wondered if it would get home! We can’t say a big enough thank you to Tom McKitrick and Phoenix for their generosity in providing this vehicle. No doubt some of you will see us out and about’.

Before the Suzuki team left there was time to check out a couple of the animals currently at the hospital. One being a beautiful Seal, Whitley Bay, who was found and taken into care to recover and the good news is she is soon to be released out into the wild again.

Another star patient is the baldy hedgehog who uncurled to show off whilst we visited who is also recovering well due to the great work of the staff at Hessilhead.

For more information on the word done at the hospital please visit www.hessilhead.org.uk or if you see any Wildlife in need of rescue give them a call on 01505 502415.

Excitement builds for the release of the new Shogun

This is a car that we've been looking forward to the release of for some time now. Mitsubishi have been known to produce cars that are not only able to drive on almost every terrain, but their cars have an element of elegance, and one of their most prestigious models is the Shogun.

Since it was first manufactured, the Shogun has evolved to a prestige model, that make it's owners proud. Although the new models have moved on with the times, they still serve their original purpose of being tow-truck, all terrain vehicles.

The shogun has been credited with introducing a new breed of vehicles to the motor industry. As the years go on other models and manufacturers have set their sights on the style and fashion of their vehicles, the Shogun has kept their brute strength while being an aesthetically attractive vehicle.

2015 will see the release of the fourth generation of the world's most well known 4x4's. New technologies added to the car's arsenal while maintaining the features that make the Shogun unique to other 4x4 vehicles.

The new Shogun will be available in Long Wheel Base (5 Door) and Short Wheel Base (3 Door).

The short wheel base Shogun is sporty and compact version of the Long Wheel Base with all of it's power to go with it. The Long Wheel Base has a 3 tonne towing capacity with an unrivalled off-road driving experience.
There are a number of features including:

* Mitsubishi Active Stability and Traction Control (M-ASTC)
ABS with EBD Front/side/curtain SRS airbags
18" alloy wheels

Phoenix MG gets it’s skates on with British & Scottish Ice Skating Champion Taylor Ronald.

We recently welcomed Taylor Ronald, successful ice skating champion and famous face in the skating world when she came and took our MG 3 for a spin.
The star from TV show “Coached off the Couch” on STV and ‘Kyran Brachan’s Ice Party’ tour which saw her travel the UK with ‘Dancing on Ice’ star Kyran (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3TpIz9qJ5v4 ) chose Phoenix as she’s thinking of changing her car.

Taylor is a busy lady. Ice skating training 5 times a week as well as finishing her college courses allowed her to cover a good few miles in the MG3 and it did not disappoint. After driving the trendy MG 3 she said, “It is definitely at the top of my new car wish list, my friends all loved getting a lift in it. It was great to drive, looks amazing and I loved that I could sync my phone and play music through the Bluetooth. When I pick my MG I will be taking advantage of the customised design so I can make it unique”.

The benefit of the new MG is that the styling of the car can be custom designed by the customer with a choice of colours for the wing mirrors, body, roof, alloys as well as a choice of graphics that can be added.

I think it is safe to say the MG was a hit with Taylor and it’s great to hear such good feedback of this exciting new brand to Phoenix.

Craig Ronald and the Kia sorento

Welcome to my latest blog for the award winning Phoenix Car Company.

It's been a busy time with plenty miles being done so it was time for my Kia Optima to go back and sold to a lucky buyer, they won't be disappointed as the Kia Optima is a fantastic car, I miss it already but on the upside I have borrowed a new Kia Sorento that I've been driving for a week or so now which is also a fantastic car well 4x4.

It's been great to drive; the elevated driving position is fantastic especially for a wee guy like me. It also does not drive like a large SUV it's so comfortable it has the 2.2 litre Diesel engine with an auto box option.

It is so responsive and nippy for a big car, I was also very surprised at the consumption, and up and down to Aberdeen this week it was getting me 40 miles to the gallon which is brilliant.

And then there's the space, it's a golfers dream! The boot is massive, ideal for those weekends away with your pals, 4 sets would be a breeze. Well done Kia, the new Sorento is certainly worth consideration.

Well for me it's a week off, before I head up North for the Tomatin Pro Am which takes place at Royal Dornoch, Nairn West and Castle Stuart, so hopefully a good week to add to some good results the last few weeks.

Until the next time you all be safe and get down to Phoenix for some amazing 64 plate deals.

Regards
Craig.
